SD in the News | Mfg Week, Wealth, Homeowners, and Drivers

SDinNewsAnother Manufacturing Week has wrapped up and, in case you missed it, the GOED has improved the online Manufacturer Directory by offering more search features. Previously you were limited to searching by NAICS title, the company name, the city, and the employee size. But now you can also search by keyword, NAICS code, export status, county, contact person, and parent company.

The 3rd Annual Demography Conference kicks off this evening with a reception and continues tomorrow and Friday. One of GOED’s very own, Mark Boehm, will be leading a session on the Wage Calculator and Wage Study.

Pierre, SD ranks 37th on The Bloomberg Small Town Wealth Index. The community has a median household income of $58,121 and a median home value of $153,400.

Pierre also ranks as the 2nd Best State Capital to Live according to finance blog Smart Asset. Unemployment, violent and property crime, discretionary income, and dining and entertainment were all key factors in the ranking. Honolulu came in 3rd. So really, Pierre is better than a tropical paradise.

homeowners_2_mapSmart Asset touts us again by declaring South Dakota the 3rd best state for Homeowners. This is due to a number of factors including price per square foot, appreciation, ratio of income to average home price, foreclosure rates, property taxes and insurance, and burglary rate.

South Dakota is also a top state for drivers, ranking 9th in Bankrate.com’s Best and Worst States for Drivers ranking. Factors considered include commute time, insurance premiums, gasoline spending, repair costs, car thefts, and fatal crashes.
