Every year since 1955 the Governor’s Office of Economic Development has surveyed South Dakota manufacturers, collecting land, building, and equipment investment numbers within the given calendar year. Numbers for 2014 capital investment have been tabulated and 2014 was the 3rd best year for capital investment since the surveys inception. Following is a look at capital investment over the past 10 years by South Dakota’s manufacturers.
Capital investments by South Dakota manufacturers in the last three years were three of the five highest ever recorded. Only investments in 2006 and 2007 were higher, and 2012 just barely edged out 2008 for a top five placement. A variety of industries contributed to these large investment years. Ethanol producers, value added ag processors and companies in the bioscience industry had major impacts on these numbers.
Historically, there are four major manufacturing groups that are consistently the top investors in South Dakota. These are also the same sectors that account for the majority of manufacturing employment in the state.
