2013 Cities and Towns Total Population Estimates Released

populationestimatesThe Census Bureau has released the 2013 Population Estimates for Cities and Towns. Those cities in South Dakota that saw the largest gains in population since 2010 are:

  • Sioux Falls (10,779 – 7.0%)
  • Rapid City (2,848 – 4.2%)
  • Box Elder (1,280 – 16.4%)
  • Aberdeen (1,242 – 4.8%)
  • Brookings (870 – 3.9%)
  • Harrisburg (765 – 18.7%)
  • Brandon (633 – 7.1%)
  • Tea (619 – 16.3%)
  • Spearfish (575 – 5.5%)
  • Huron (505 – 4.0%)

For a different perspective, those South Dakota cities that saw the largest percentage in population growth since 2010 are:

  • Harrisburg (765 – 18.7%)
  • Box Elder (1,280 – 16.4%)
  • Tea (619 – 16.3%)
  • Hartford (389 – 15.3%)
  • Wall (110 – 14.4%)
  • Aurora (72 – 13.5%)
  • Summerset (215 – 11.9%)
  • Cottonwood (1 -11.1%)
  • Wentworth (14 – 8.2%)
  • Ramona (14 – 8.1%)

The Census Bureau also released tables ranking the rate of population growth for cities in the U.S. over 50,000 population. Sioux Falls and Rapid City made an appearance in these rankings:

From 2010-2013 (3-Year Growth)

  • Sioux Falls ranked 58th (10,779 – 7.0%)
  • Rapid City ranked 224th (2,842 – 4.2%)

From 2012-2013 (1-Year Growth)

  • Sioux Falls ranked 40th (4,446 -2.8%)
  • Rapid City ranked 219th (869 – 1.2%)
