Data Resources: Labor Market Information Center (LMIC)

LMICAccurate and timely labor force data is one of, if not, the most important factor in the site selection process. Growing companies will always ask for workforce information such as availability of workers in the area, number of workers by occupation, current unemployment rates, and local industry mix.

Fortunately, the South Dakota Dept. of Labor & Regulation makes it easy to access current labor data for counties, states, and country through the Labor Market Information Center (LMIC) website. The site is organized by types of data available including:

  • Employment Projections
  • Labor Force
  • Labor Supply
  • Unemployment Rates
  • Wages
  • Workers by Industry

Each topic has detailed data available and can be downloaded in excel for customization purposes.

In addition to the site’s organization by topic (the click through menu on the right side of the home page) it also offers Community Labor Profiles. These profiles compile pertinent workforce data into one convenient document for a community, county, or multi-county region which is defined by the user.

Labor data for all 50 states is also available for most topics. Each section’s landing page states the geographic detail available for data in that topic. For example:

Covered Workers and Pay

Annual Data

Quarterly Data

A wealth of information is available at the LMIC website. With just a couple clicks you can answer most any site selection question on your local labor pool.
